Genotropin contains a human growth hormone (also called somatropin) produced through genetic engineering. It has the same structure and properties as the human hormone released by the pituitary gland.

Genotropin is used to stimulate growth in young children/adolescents with growth hormone secretion insufficiency (growth hormone deficiency) or with a delay in intrauterine growth, growth disorders due to chronic renal failure, in cases of Prader-Willi syndrome in conjunction with a low-calorie diet, as well as in girls with Turner syndrome.

In adults, treatment with genotropin can just as easily be established in the context of a clear growth hormone deficiency consecutive with a condition of the growth hormone productive glands (hypothalamus and pituitary gland) to continue the treatment of a growth hormone deficiency noted during childhood.

Genotropin Bodybuilding | What to consider outside of treatment?

In young children/adolescents, genotropin will only affect body growth if the growth phase is not completed. Adolescents participating in competitive sports should be aware that the active ingredient in genotropin can produce a positive result during anti-doping tests.

Genotropin Pen | When should Genotropin not be taken/used?

Genotropin should not be used:

  • In case of hypersensitivity to somatropin.
  • If you have an active tumor (cancer) or are not currently receiving cancer treatment.
  • If you have a serious illness (e.g. complications following open or abdominal cardiac surgery, serious injury, acute respiratory distress or other).
  • In the case of congenital (rare) diseases such as Down syndrome, Bloom Syndrome or Fanconi anemia.

Doctors may not prescribe treatment with genotropin for patients with severe diabetes. Once growth is complete (closed conjugate cartilage), genotropin is ineffective.

How to use genotropin?

Do not change the prescribed dosage. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you believe the medication is too effective or too strong.

The active ingredient in Genotropin is a protein hormone. Just like proteins ingested with food, it is digested in the stomach and therefore loses its effects. This is why somatropin must be injected under the skin (subcutaneous injection).

Genotropin | Dosage

The normal dosage is as follows:

  • Children/adolescents with growth hormone deficiency: 0.025-035 mg per kg body weight per day;
  • In case of Prader-Willi syndrome: 0.035 mg per kg body weight per day. A daily dose of 2.7 mg should not be exceeded. Carbohydrate metabolism should be monitored by a physician;

In adults with growth hormone deficiency, the dose is determined individually depending on the response to treatment and the side effects observed.

In adults continuing growth hormone treatment after childhood growth hormone deficiency, treatment at a dose of 0.2 to 0.5 mg per day is recommended.

For patients whose growth hormone deficiency is only detected in adulthood, the initial daily dose is usually 0.15-0.30 mg. The daily maintenance dose rarely exceeds 1.33 mg. The required dose decreases with age.

In women and men over 60 years of age, treatment should begin with a dose of 0.1 to 0.2 mg per day. The daily maintenance dose rarely exceeds 0.5 mg at home;

  • In case of Turner syndrome and chronic renal failure: 0.045-050 mg per kg body weight per day;
  • In small children with a delay in the development of the intrauterine length of the body: 0.033-0.067 mg per kg body weight per day.

Preparation of the solution

Genotropin 5 mg and Genotropin 12 mg are dissolved directly in the Goquick 5 and Goquick 12 injector pens. The active ingredient, in the form of lyophilized powder, is located in the front part of the two-compartment bulb, the solvent in the back.

Recommendations for use

Administer the genotropin solution as instructed by your doctor or a specialist, by subcutaneous injection (under the skin) in the thigh, possibly under the skin of the abdomen or buttock.

The bite site should be changed daily to prevent subcutaneous tissue from closing at the injection site (a condition called lipoatrophy). In other words, never inject the same area twice in a row. The injection site should not be massaged.

The dose prescribed by the attending physician is generally administered in the evening before bedtime. If you miss a dose, continue the next day as if nothing had happened. Under no circumstances should you administer the missed dose with the next dose.

The duration of treatment is generally several years, until pursuing treatment with genotropin no longer results in additional growth. This point is reached when the femoral conjugate cartilage—the growth media between the long (tubular) portion of the femur and the articular portion—is closed, thus stopping bone growth. Only a doctor can determine this point.

Genotropin side effects

The use of genotropin may cause the following side effects:

In adults

  • Sensory/swelling disturbances, stiffness in the arms and legs, joint pain, muscle pain, water retention (manifested by swelling of the fingers or ankles).
  • Pain or burning sensations in the hands or forearms (known as carpal tunnel syndrome).
  • Increase in blood sugar (blood sugar), diabetes, appearance of signs of hypothyroidism, increase in intracranial pressure (accompanied by symptoms such as severe headache, visual disturbances or vomiting), increase in the volume of the mammary gland in humans.

In children

  • Redness, itching, burning sensation or temporary pain at the injection site.
  • Sensory/swelling disturbances, stiffness in the arms and legs, joint pain, muscle pain, water retention (manifested by swelling of the fingers or ankles), rash, itching, urticaria.
  • Increased intracranial pressure (accompanied by symptoms such as severe headache, visual disturbances, or vomiting), early growth (during childhood) of one or both of the mammary glands.

Genotropin preservation
